What we do
Wide Area Communications produces innovative, cost effective solution for content-rich web sites. Our aim is to produce the best sets of tools to let the editorial and marketing people in your organisation get on with what they do best -- creating the valuable content and compelling sales propositions which set your organisation apart.
We understand how modern web sites work and how they interact with services like search. Using our tools means your web site will work for the users and the search engines. Understanding search has led us to take an approach where every page is a home page to ensure that visitors to your site from search engines stay on your site.
For your business we will focus on the overall cost of ownership. We measure cost in terms of speed (opportunity) and infrastructure (cost of employing web specialists) as well as direct project costs (cash). Our unique templating system means that we always deliver great return on investment.

The company
The comapany was founded in 1995 by Simon Brock and Ian Wrigley who had written for various IT magazines. Simon brought extensive knowledge of the IT industry and the Internet -- he been using the Internet since 1985 -- while Ian had extensive knowledge of the publishing industry. They realised it has more sense to deliver Internet services to clients rather than just write about them.
Since 1995 many thing have changed -- Ian has established WA Communications in LA. The UK company that as the web became more mainstream, more powerful and more complex, bespoke developments would become more expensive for clients to buy and maintain.
As such the company developed its own innovative template system for producing web sites from content management systems. This allows for the complete front end of a web site to be produced with out need to bespoke programming. The content template talks directly to the CMS in a simple way. Coupled with modern HTML and CSS techniques, a powerful web site can be produced by anyone with HTML skills.

Join us
Wide Area is always on the look out for talented web developers.
As most of our systems are written PHP and use back end MySQL databases, we look for people who can apply their experience and talents in these areas to produce innovative solutions. Whether it is extending our web site management system or integrating with someone else's system we are looking for the best solution.
Our front end developers take the designs and make them happen. They always use modern HTML/CSS based implementations coupled with our own 'block language' to pull content from the CMS. Increasingly Javascript is being used make front ends more dynamic and talk via AJAX to back end systems.
As well as the resident team we often use freelance developers and we are always keen to extend our network of deigners. If you are interested in working with us send us your cv and some examples of your work.

How we work
At the start of each project we make sure that we understand the complete set of requirements from a commercial, functional and operational perspective.
To do this we use a system called viewpoint analysis is based on the premise that any system can be viewed from a number of different angles (or viewpoints). So rather than starting from the premise that ‘I want a system to do the following’, viewpoint analysis starts from the premise ‘What are we all going to do with the system’.
This process ensures that each stakeholder within the client's organisation is considered and non-functional issues are covered such as hosting, security and maintenance. We adopt this practice to minimise risk and ensure that our clients understands the true cost of ownership - we aim to avoid surprises at all costs!
- Stakeholder review
- Extensive consultation
- Detailed requirements capture
- Project management
- Training
- Account management
- Transparent cost of ownership
